What was AutoZone original name? ›

Opened in 1979 as Auto Shack by J.R. "Pitt" Hyde III, AutoZone was created with the belief that we can offer ordinary customers clean, well-organized auto parts stores and excellent customer service.

Since the open of the first store in Mexico on 1998, we have expanded our footprint nationwide, providing excellent customer service to each consumer in more than 500 stores across the country.
